Ciabot Berton

Frazione Santa Maria,1 | La Morra CN

History

What binds the Oberto family to La Morra and the Barolo hills is an ancient and indissoluble bond.
It all began in 1876, when the great-great-grandmother Maria bought the first vineyard she owned in one of the best cru of La Morra, Rive. At the end of the 1950's, thanks to Luigi, the typical Langa farm, which in addition to the vineyard was dedicated to the cultivation of fruit and to the livestock, became a company that began to specialise in vineyards. In 1961 the first vintage of Barolo was bottled, and between the 1960s and the 1970s the family acquired new vineyards, to which were added those inherited from Luigi's wife, Maria Beatrice, in the historic Roggeri cru. In the 1980s, the current winery was built in a dominant position with a panoramic view of the Barolo hills. The name "ciabot berton" derives from the small building (ciabot, in Piedmontese) on the site, which belonged to a certain Berton, who, trying to produce artisanal fireworks, caused a fire. The ruins of the "ciabot" can still be seen today from the cellar. In the 1990s, Luigi's children, Paola and Marco, joined the company. Between the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, the company's attachment to the land and respect for nature steered it towards a path of sustainability, also thanks to the indications for a low environmental impact in agriculture provided by the Integrated Farming Regulations. In 2010 Federica, Marco's wife and sommelier, joined the company. Luigi's precious teachings, combined with an ever-increasing experience in meticulously managing the vineyards and winemaking, give wines that are a pure expression of a unique and fascinating territory.
